HONG KONG: OFFICE RENT WILL GO UP 15%

DTZ Debenham Tie Leung estimates that there will be a 15 % to 20% growth in grade-A office space in Central, and an average overall 8% to 10% growth in office rental rate in 2001. It believes the average rent in Central in the last quarter of 2000 is HK$ 52 per sq. ft. and the vacancy rate is 5.6%. Earlier, it said the rental rate of Hong Kong office is the third highest in the world.

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) has purchased some HK$ 54mn worth of stakes in SmarTone since the news that British Telecom (BT) is selling its 20% stake in SmarTone broke out in late 2000. Analysts said the acquisition might mark the beginning of the merger and acquisition era in the telecom sector.
