Has NAFTA helped Mexico's economy?
Article Abstract:
Supporters of NAFTA believe Mexico's economic problems are caused by previous governments and that NAFTA is responsible for the rapid recovery from the 1994-1995 recession. Opponents do see some benefits from NAFTA but are concerned because Mexico is the least developed member of NAFTA and so lacks the infrastructure of Canada and the US. The labor and environment provisions of NAFTA have not been completely enforced and US industries are using Mexico as a cheap labor market instead of producing goods in Mexico to be used by Mexicans.
