Has the rise of managed care hurt patients' rights?
Article Abstract:
The rise of managed care may or may not have hurt rights of patients. Congress would be able to restore consumer confidence in managed care through true reform, according to the legislative counsel for the Consumers Union. True reform would involve passing enforceable and loophole-free legislation including a fair review process, full disclosure and full accountability. According to the president of the American Association of Health Plans, those plans have advanced the cause of the rights of patients and if the new system is not perfect it should be worked on, not micromanaged. The system that existed in the past had costly flaws.

Drug Resistant Bacteria
Article Abstract:
Common bacteria are developing resistance to powerful antibiotics, making infections more difficult to cure. Public health officials have identified resistant strains of tuberculosis, pneumonia, gonorrhea and meningitis. Resistant strains of bacteria contribute to the almost 90,000 deaths from infection acquired in hospitals annually. Resistance has been blamed on overuse of antibiotics and the use of growth hormones in livestock.
