Helping the homeless: will cuts in welfare spending cause hardships?
Article Abstract:
Americans are feeling less compassionate about the plight of the homeless, and proposed welfare cuts may increase the number of homeless. Homeless services are facing opposition from local governments and residents. However, programs that help homeless become self-sufficient appear to receive public support. Reform advocates have been focusing on the negative aspects of the homeless and homeless services, which may have caused foundations to put their funding elsewhere due to the belief that their money is not solving the problem.

Privatizing government services: can for-profit businesses do a better job?
Article Abstract:
Privatization of some government services, notably Social Security and the Postal Service, is being considered to decrease costs and increase efficiency. Proponents think that the competition created by contracting out work will improve the federal government programs. So far, many state and local governments are experimenting with privatization, but the federal government has resisted. Unions oppose the practice because they fear workers' pay will be cut.

Consumer debt: do Americans buy too much on credit?
Article Abstract:
Controversy exists on whether Americans make too many purchases on credit, and have too much consumer debt. Credit card debt has almost reached a half billion dollars, an all-time high at five times its 1980 level. Personal bankruptcies have also peaked, and some economists blame credit cards for contributing to this. However, others interpret debt as undergoing cyclical fluctuations which will naturally reverse trends.
