Vladimir Ilyich Lenin in 1918 ordered the assassination of Romanov family. In 1998, President Boris Yeltsin decided to give Russia's last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family a proper burial. They were to be laid to rest in the Peter and Paul Cathedral, but the Russian Orthodox Church declined to preside at the interment, arguing the remains may not be authentic.

The US is caught between two allies, NATO member Turkey and the Iraqi Kurds, and yet is trying to pressurize Iraq's Kurds to crack down on the PKK themselves, before Ankara boosts its campaign.
