The thousands of documented cases of child abuse in chinese orphanages are products of China's one-child-per-family policy and the high economic value placed on males by Chinese culture. The reported abuses found in China's orphanages are not unique, similar situations have existed in the US.

Chinese scholars Xiao Qian and Wen Jieruo have completed a translation of James Joyce's 'Ulysses' that has become a surprise best-seller in China. The translators faced many challenges in working on the book and used 5,991 footnotes to explain the novel's idiosyncracies.
