International treaties
Article Abstract:
The 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees was the first official agreement observed by Western European countries. Since then a number of treaties have been introduced and drafted in an attempt to create uniformityin Western Europe's immigration policy. The 1957 Treaty of Rome placed restrictions on laws which allowed European nations to deport refugees. The Maastrict Treaty of 1991 nearly succeeded in harmonizing the immigration policybut was obstructed by the new influx of refugees and immigrants into Western Europe.

Should the United Nations establish a permanent international criminal court?
Article Abstract:
Some people are calling for the establishment of a permanent international criminal court by the UN, saying that human rights laws will otherwise not be enforced. They point out that, since the Cold War has ended, the time is ripe for true international cooperation. Opponents of the idea beleive such a court would be too politicized and that even if someone was prosecuted by the court, getting them in custody and applying punishment would be a major problem.

Should the U.S. support Taiwan's membership in international organizations?
Article Abstract:
Some people think the US should support Taiwan's membership in international organizations, while other people think that long-term US interests with China would not be served by such a move. Proponents of Taiwan's membership in the international arena say that the US, however, should not support independence for Taiwan. Opponents say China would see the US endorsement of Taiwan in international organizations as supporting the island's independence.
