Internet rings up 'puny' sales
Article Abstract:
According to a landmark survey from Statistics Canada, online purchases in Canada accounted for only 0.2% of the total $1.8-trillion in overall private sector spending. The survey found that Canadian companies received $4.2-billion in online orders in 1999. In the retail sector, Canadians spent $610.6-million in 1999, which is less than the amount spent by the Americans. According to the Department of Commerce's Census Bureau, Americans spent US$5.2-billion, 0.6 of all retail sales, over the Internet during the fourth quarter. During the fourth quarter of 1999, Canadians conducted 0.4% of their shopping over the Internet, 50% less than the amount spent by Americans.

Philsar secures venture capital

Philsar Electronics Inc, a manufacturer of radio signal processors for wireless communication equipment, generated $10.25 mil in venture capital from a group of investors lead by Working Ventures Canadian Fund of Toronto, Canada, with a contribution of $2.1 mil. Other investors include Murray Hill, NJ-based Lucent Technologies Inc, Japan-based Omron Corp, Santa Clara, CA-based Intel Corp, Palo Alto, CA-based JAFCO America Ventures Inc and Westwood, MA-based Prism Venture Partners.
