It's no longer just techno-hobbyists who meet by modem
Article Abstract:
The computer bulletin board and on-line services industries are growing explosively. Jack Rickard, editor of Boardwatch magazine, says there were 3,500 public access bulletin board services (BBSs) in the US five years ago, and there are about 60,000 of them now. Rickard estimates that the bulletin board industry is worth $500 million. Growth of services at private companies is happening even faster: there are now about 120,000 such services. About 10 million people regularly use publicly available BBSs. Dial-up numbers for BBSs are found in publications such as BBS Caller's Digest and Computer Shopper. BBSs devoted to almost any topic of interest are available.
