Jean Coutu ordered to stop selling cigarettes
Article Abstract:
Jean Coutu Group (PIC) Inc. of Longueuil in Quebec, Canada, the largest drug store chain in the province, has been ordered by the Quebec Superior Court to immediately cease the sale of cigarettes. The court upheld a 1994 ruling of the Quebec Order of Pharmacies banning members from selling tobacco in their stores. Jean Coutu reported that it had informed all of its 205 Quebec franchisees, which are expected to comply with the order immediately. A provincial legislation passed in the spring of 1998 likewise called for the banning of the sale of tobacco products in drug stores by Oct. 2000.
