Microsoft judge steps down from bias case

Microsoft Corp, a software manufacturer, has won a legal victory after Thomas Penfield Jackson, the judge who ruled that the company violated antitrust laws, stepped down from a $5 billion racial-discrimination lawsuit against the firm. Jackson was also criticized by an appeals court for his press interviews regarding his ruling on the antitrust case. However, Jackson denied that his comments reflect a personal bias against the company.

Justice Dept. feasts eyes on Microsoft bust-up

The inability to reach an out-of-court settlement on the antitrust case of Microsoft Corp has led the Dept of Justice to consider breaking up the software company. However, two major technology investment banks approached by officials did not accept the request to determine Microsoft's breakup points and its impact on the market. A ruling on the antitrust case is expected in late 1999.
