The two Australian rugby leagues that separated in 1995 have reunited into one league in 1998. News Ltd and the Australian Rugby League will rejoin to form the new National Rugby League, headquartered at the Sydney Showground complex. The 20-club national competition will remain in place until 2000, when it will be reduced to 14 teams. The league's leaders face the challenge of winning back fans and controlling inflation.
