The fishing industry in Labrador, Newfoundland, is in decline. The Canadian government has imposed a moratorium on northern cod fishing in some areas. About half of the 250 fishermen in the area are receiving federal assistance. The others try to make a living fishing shrimp and scallops.

Canadian nurse Elisabeth Carrier has assisted in 14 relief missions in 15 years, mostly for the Red Cross. Carrier, one of 5,000 medical professionals from Canada who participates in international medical relief, is paid for her work.

Canada defeated arch-rival Russia 8-5, to win the gold medal in the 1995 World Junior Hockey Championship in Alberta. Many of the games were sell-outs, due to the continued strike of the National Hockey League.
