Local booksellers battle big chains
Article Abstract:
The market share of independent book retailers has declined from 32.5% in 1991 to 17% of books sales in 1998. Chain stores took more than 25% of booksales in 1998, while the market share of online sales is projected to reach 25% by 2004. To counter the trend, independent book retailers have launched a $2-mil print ad campaign urging book lovers to support small, independent bookstores rather than chain stores. The group will also launch a Web site, Booksense.com, that would give them the same leverage being enjoyed on the Internet by chain book stores.

Scrappy UPN touting season's growth
Article Abstract:
Los Angeles, CA-based United Paramount Network (UPN) has rebounded from a declining ratings position in 1998 but appears to be seeking a buyer. Advertisements released by the network to tout its rapid growth versus key rivl WB Television Network do not reflect the fact that UPN's increase in upfront advertising revenues in 1999 is still small compared with that of WB's and it will lose an estimated $190 million or more in 1999 compared to WB's expected loss of roughly $90 million.
