Well over 20,000 people queued up to apply for a few high-paying factory jobs at a Pickering, Ontario, General Motors plant in Jan 1995, which is evidence that unemployment is a pressing problem in Canada. Analysts such as Jeremy Rifkin claim that technology is eliminating the need for mass labor.

The Nova Scotia Liberal Party elected to keep John Savage as premier and party leader, but many party members were dissatisfied with the vote. Savage has been unable to reduce the deficit without increasing taxes, but he has balanced the 1995-96 operating budget.
