Simon spends almost 6 months a year traveling in her roles as ambassador for circumpolar affairs and chair of the Arctic Council, which she helped to found. Simon, the first Inuit native to hold an ambassadorial position in Canada, hopes to demonstrate the benefits of international cooperation.

Robert Esmie quit the Canadian 4x100 m relay team after it won the 1997 world championship, apparently feeling slighted by Donovan Bailey and other teammates. An ad calling Michael Johnson the fastest man in the world was changed after he lost a race with Bailey.
