Article Abstract:
Negative reaction to the Taiwanese ship of illegal aliens stranded in the swamps near Sydney in May, 1999, contrasts with the welcome given Vietnamese refugees in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Those from Vietnam were political refugees, but the current economic refugees from Asia are almost uniformly seen as a threat. Part of this attitude is produced by the failed war on illegal drugs.

Article Abstract:
Lady Grounds, widow of famed architect Sir Roy Grounds, wants to protect her husband's modernist building, the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, from the A$160 mil in renovations slated for 1999. The straight and simple lines of the interior will be compromised by an Italian design that is intended to increase the gallery's storage and exhibition space.
