Medicos get the cold-shoulder treatment
Article Abstract:
A 58-year-old Chinese orthopaedic surgeon, who became an Australian citizen in 1994, is unable to practice surgery until he can pass a Medical Council examination for general practice. Dr. Ding Chen helped develop new bone-grafting techniques and has been trained at Beijing Medical College and Harvard University. He practiced surgery in Australia from 1988 to 1992, when his temporary registration ended. His application for pre-examination training was refused and he studies independently. Chen and colleagues believe he was discriminated against due to age, and also believe the examination requirements are unreasonable for a surgeon of his experience and speciality.
