School of deportment

Article Abstract:

Australian's immigration policies are complicated by many refugee women who flee China so they do not have to have state-mandated abortions. However, only five of 944 Chinese refugees who arrived on boats in Australian since 1995 have been granted refugee status. Others have been detained or deported to confront the strict Chinese abortion laws. An unlikely alliance of Australian anti-abortionists and pro-choice liberals has been formed in support of the Chinese women.

A flea in the electorate's ear

Article Abstract:

Australian Sen Richard Alston stated during a parliamentary speech that gay relationships are not normal. His comments represented an underlying government attitude toward gays and other minorities, including the dispossessed. Other politicians, such as Senator Karen Synon and Health Minister Michael Wooldridge, have been guilty of making personal attacks in the context of political speeches.
