Mexico's future: is it on the path to true democracy?
Article Abstract:
The Jul 6, 1997 election in Mexico signaled a major victory for the Party of the Democratic Revolution because it managed to prevent the Institutional Revolutionary Party from taking a lower house majority. This is seen as a move toward democracy and some analysts believe, combined with the rapid recovery of the Mexican economy from the 1994-1995 recession, this signals a brighter future for Mexico. However, others feel the economic benefits from NAFTA are only impacting the border between the two countries and that extreme poverty and increased drug trafficking are likely in the future.

Artificial intelligence: are scientists close to creating a machine that 'thinks'?
Article Abstract:
Advances in artificial intelligence and robots are being applied in real-world situations but the ability to replicate human intelligence has still not been achieved. Researchers are approaching this issue from two directions: top-down, by providing a computer with millions of details from life; and bottom-up, by creating a robot with sight, hearing and movement and encouraging it to learn by doing. Human intelligence is very complex and intuition and common sense have yet to be replicated in computers, despite the apparent ability of Deep Blue, the IBM chess playing computer.

Liberal arts education
Article Abstract:
The liberal arts education, the foundation of higher learning since ancient times, has changed as colleges have increasingly offered more career-oriented programs. Some say career-oriented courses of study are valuable only if grounded in liberal arts subjects. Many educators further argue that liberal education should focus on the Western tradition in the US, but some argue that the cultures of the world should be covered.
