The creation of the Internet has not been as beneficial to democracy as many of its original proponents once predicted. University of Illinois media professor Bob McChesney has written three books which outline the ways in which major corporate interests have taken over the opportunity of internet journalism. The consolidation of the news industry into several major companies who also control what is broadcast over the Internet limits the democrat process.

Australia's telecommunications carriers cannot keep up with the country's demand for fiber optic cable. MCI WorldCom owns its own infrastructure, and is primarily a data carrier, which separates it from other telecommunications carriers. It invested $100 mil in a cable system linking the US and Australia. Its takeover of OzEmail will allow MCI to enter the Australian Internet market.
