Singer Joni Mitchell's reunion with the daughter she gave up for adoption has drawn public attention to whether adoptees and their birth parents should be reunited. Although most adoptees want to know at least basic genetic information about their birth families, most adoption records remain secret in Canada.

The incidence of spouse abuse seems to have become more public and prevalent in the 1990s. Well-known cases, such as the Paul Bernardo sex-murder case and the O.J. Simpson case have caused the media to focus on the crime. Although abuse of women is more publicized, incidents continue to increase.
