War spurs navigation by satellite
Article Abstract:
The Persian Gulf War between Iraq and American-led coalition forces is spurring the use of the United States Department of Defense's Navstar Global Positioning System. The Navstar Global Positioning System is a satellite-based navigation system that fighter pilots are using to determine their location in a featureless desert. The system has been under development since 1973 and will cost around $10 billion when completed. The system is highly accurate and allows pilots to determine their position within 100 feet and sometimes within a fraction of an inch. The navigation system, which is commercially produced, is also used by foot soldiers and military ships; selective availability allows the military to send erroneous information to non-military receivers.
