When Mike Ruettgers took over as executive chairman of storage company EMC in 1989, he realised that the business would have to go beyond memory manufacture in order for it to grow. Ruettgers realised that businesses with computers, no matter which type of computers, would have to store their data somewhere, and so EMC became a data storage company.
