Assessing the 'bird flu' threat
Article Abstract:
The strain of avian influenza discovered in Hong Kong during Dec 1997 is unusually virulent and unpredictable. The virus passes from chickens to humans, who in turn can infect other humans, who help produce a hybrid form that spreads freely among people. This chain is not clearly established, but research scientists are working to have a vaccine against this virus if it develops the ability to shift antigens.

Heartsick America
Article Abstract:
According to a federal report released in the United States in May 2001, approximately 36 million Americans need to take medication in order to lower their cholesterol levels. The numbers have risen dramatically, not because cholesterol levels have risen, but because the benefits of taking the medication to avoid the risk of coronary heart disease have become even clearer.

A second opinion on sex
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association has terminated the editor of the Journal of American Medical Association, Dr. E. Ratcliffe. The editor was terminated because of a survey published in the journal suggesting that Midwestern college students agree with President Bill Clinton's narrow definition that oral sex does not constitute a sexual relationship.
