'People power' turns sour

Following the first elections since President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took power in the Philippines in 1997, there is continued unrest and a lack of confidence in Arroyo's ability to lead her country. The president believes that she was right in arresting former president Joseph Estrada in order to put a stop to his political activity.

Although US President Bush is attempting to broker peace in the Middle East, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has warned that the Israelis will not go ahead with the July 2001 peace talks unless the Palestinian violence stops. Sharon says that his country reserves the right to self-defense.
