South African president-elect Thabo Mbeki believes the social and economic foundation for a new South Africa was established during the administration of Nelson Mandela, and his goal is to continue the work. He aims to maintain an open economy and positive international relations. He considers himself to be more of an academic than a politician but the struggle against apartheid led him to a political position.

The Palestinian Authority's security chief on the West Bank, Jibril Rajoub, says he has limited powers to stop the violence against Israel. Rajoub says that the Palestinian authorities will arrest Palestinians who commit acts of terrorism only when Israel does the same thing.
