This article examines the possible effect of tax breaks proposed by Australian Treasurer Peter Costello and designed to boost the value of biotechnology stocks by making it more profitable for institutional investors to back venture capital projects. Relevant details include Costello's proposals to grant tax breaks to superannuation funds and overseas pension funds that could treble venture capital funds available to biotechnology companies.

Cape shows no fear

Cape Range's principal investment for most of the 1990s has been a 20% interest in US electricity research company Exergy Inc. In Mar, 1999, the shareholders of Cape Range voted to sell its share in Exergy and move into telecommunications technology. In 1998 Cape Range bought an 85% interest in Australian communications systems supplier Paradox Digital.
