The research conducted by Australian paleontologist Roger Buick on microscopic lifeforms that bear information about the dawning of life on Earth, is helping scientists prepare for a future unmanned journey to Mars to collect rocks and learn more about the planet's origins. Buick has been involved in finding 3.5 billion-year-old stromatolites in Western Australia, and the world's oldest oil trapped in 3-million-year-old rocks.

The British animal right group, Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (VIVA), has launched a public relations campaign against kangaroo shooting. Activists in Britain have began demonstrations outside stores and restaurants, calling for a boycott. The kangaroo industry in Australia fears it is the next target and is fighting back to save its export market, which is worth about $15.3 mil annually.
