CEO 'who loves to win' helps Avis turn the corner
Article Abstract:
Avis CEO A Barry Rand is tasked with transforming Avis from a car rental company into a provider of corporate vehicle-management services. Not only that, Rand also has to convince that Avis' stock, which closed $22.25 per share on Aug 3, 2000, is worth twice as much. He rues that the stock has not caught up with investors despite beating analysts' estimates by a nickel or more every quarter since 1997. He also has pared down Avis' corporate debt by half and is integrating affiliate PHH's technology across all operations at Avis.

Cedant's bid to buy avis raises eyebrows
Article Abstract:
Cendant's offer to acquire Avis by bidding $742 million for the 82% of the car rental group that it does not already own has surprised Avis and market analysts. Cendant offered a "preliminary, non-binding proposal" to buy Avis at $29 per share, 14% higher than Avis' closing price of $29 per share as of Aug 14. An analyst opined that Cendant's offer does not make sense since it spun off Avis three years ago.
