The financial crisis in Asia may signal the first global recession since the great depression. The New York Federal Reserve in Sep 1998 held a meeting of the world's largest and most powerful banks. They agreed to contribute $3.5 bil to prevent the Long Term Capital fund from going bankrupt. Although these banks believe they are maintaining confidence in the global financial systems, many argue they are trying to protect their assets and bank balances.
