Parents and schools: will more parental involvement help students?
Article Abstract:
Increasing parental involvement in schools has become a nation-wide trend. A campaign by the Dept of Education, National PTA, and local groups aims to increase this involvement. Parents do library work, help teach and even take administration positions. Some teachers fear that parents are too emotionally involved and impact an otherwise professional atmosphere in school administration. The political debates surrounding curriculum and funding have also increased with parental involvement.

The new immigrants; do they threaten the American identity?
Article Abstract:
Disagreement exists on whether new immigrants harm or strengthen an American identity. Critics see a decline in civic responsibility accompanied by an increase in immigration. For example, naturalization rose to an estimated one million in 1996, while in 1985 the total was about 200,000. However, supporters of immigration note that new immigrants have traditionally been strong supporters of American ideals.
