Ottawa bends on magazines to aviod U.S. trade war
Article Abstract:
The Canadian government has agreed to include its protectionist magazine policies in the bilateral trade negotiation with the US in a move to prevent the Clinton administration's plan for a trade retaliation. The US has threatened to impose punitive duties on Canadian steel, plastics lumber, textiles and apparel imports, if the House of Commons passes the C-55 bill. The bill proposes a ban on Canadian split-run editions of foreign mgagazines. The Canadian government has promised to amend its magazine policy such as postal subsidies for publishers, restrictions on foreign ownerships and tax breaks for ads in Canadian publication.

PM ties debt relief to health education
Article Abstract:
Canada has launched a debt relief program for developing countries that invest in health and education. The plan, announced by Prime Minister Jean Chretien, would immediately wipe out around $50 million in debts owed to the Export Development Corp and Canadian Wheat Board by Tanzania, Madagascar, Honduras, Bangladesh and Zambia. Specifically excluded from the debt relief program are countries that spend on weapons and the military.
