New York's experience
Article Abstract:
Community policing was more successful in New York City, NY, in comparison with its performance in Houston, TX. Community policing was introduced to New York as far back as Jun 1984 with the New York Police Department's Community Patrol Officer Program (CPOP). Former New York Police Commissioner Lee Brown simply widened the duties of the CPOP. Community policing was also fortunate to have the support of New York Mayor David N. Dinkins. However, there is still skepticism with regard to the longevity of community policing in New York.

Los Angeles and Portland
Article Abstract:
Community policing hasfared better in Portland, OR, than in Los Angeles, CA. Residents of Los Angelesgave the new concept of policing a tepid reception, with LA city voters failingto uphold the proposed bond issue which would enable the hiring of 1,000 officers. In contrast, community policing has proven to be more effective in Portland, OR. Portland citizens, the police forces and city employees have beensuccessfully collaborating to fight crime and other urban problems, especially drug trafficking.
