Positron snapped up by U.S. firm

Positron Fiber Systems Corp., a Canadian company making multiplexers that increase the capacity of data networks, is being bought by Reltec Corp. of Cleveland, OH, a maker of telecommunications equipment, for $200 million. The deal is seen as the latest in a trend that sees Canadian technology companies being bought by bigger US firms. Under the deal, Reltec will buy all outstanding common shares of Positron for $13.63 each. The agreement is set to close in the fourth quarter of 1998. Positron had over C$28 million in sales on a yearly basis. Reltec, meanwhile posted $278 million in sales in the second quarter of 1998 alone.

Hummingbird sells PC Docs unit to Australian firm

Hummingbird Communications Ltd of Toronto, Ontario, has announced a deal to sell the PC Docs Group International Inc's billing software unit CMS/Data Inc of Tallahaasse, FL, to Solution 6 Holdings Ltd of Sydney, Australia, for $30 millon. Solution has offered to buy PC Docs in Feb 1999 for $284 million in stock but was rejected by Hummingbird. The divestment is aimed at streamlining Hummingbird's operations and reducing some debt after paying some $300 million for PC Docs.

Lycos cries uncle, jumps into bed with USA Networks

Lycos Inc has agreed to be acquired by USA Networks Inc, creating a $20 billion electronic commerce giant. Lycos, which operates what is considered the second-most-popular 'Internet portal' site, has turned back on its previous declarations to remain independent because the combination will be a juggernaut, said analysts. The new company, USA/Lycos Interactive Networks Inc, will be a goldmine for advertisers with 30 million Internet and 70 million television viewers.
