Several Canadian firms that took part in the rush to diversify now find themselves targets of such corporate raiders as Gerard Schwartz, whose Onex Corp has tendered a buyout bid for John Labatt Ltd. These raiders perform a service by punishing firms for their misguided diversification plans.

Bay Street's bonanza

Hees-Edper sold brewing and entertainment John Labatt Ltd and forest products MacMillan Bloedel Ltd to raise capital and reduce debt. The sales reduce the influence of Edper, which has been the most dominant corporation in the Canadian economy since before 1983.
