A new hub lets more LAN's join the conversation

Article Abstract:

Chipcom Corp's Chipcom Online Concentrator is a hub that can connect up to three different types of network wiring schemes. Most hubs connect one local area network to another. The Online Concentrator can route three different networks through the same hub, thereby granting greater access to more complex networks. The product is also considered to be fault tolerant because it is really two hubs in one. If one hub crashes, the other hub can handle the network traffic until the two hubs work together again. The Online Concentrator handles Ethernet, Token Ring, and Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) networks. Prices range from the 128-user $4,250 to the 40-user $1,695 version.

On line (let's hope) from the garden ...

Article Abstract:

The Democratic and Republican National Conventions illustrate the kinds of challenges that network managers nowadays encounter. Typically, local area networks (LANs) that connect as many as 100 microcomputer workstations must be installed quickly - work must be completed in about a week. There must be interconnections for data communications via telephone lines with mainframe computers located at remote sites. Word processing and electronic mail services are required, and access for laptop computer users must be provided. Three networks used at the Democratic Convention are mentioned: one was used by the Tribune Company; another by Newsday; and another by Knight-Ridder papers.
