QLT puts 2.6 million new shares up for sale

QLT PhotoTherapeutics Inc., a health sciences company, revealed that it is divesting almost 2.6 mil new common shares priced at $167 mil based on the stock's Mar 30, 1999 closing price on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The Vancouver-based company will use the proceeds of the sale primarily to fund its research and development projects, to market its Visudyn and Photofrin drug therapies and for potential acquisitions. MDS Inc. will be managing the stock sale through a syndicate of underwritters that include Yorkton Securities Inc. and CBC Wood Gundy Securities Inc.

U.S. deal boosts TLC stock 20%

TLC The Laser Center Inc has formed a joint venture with Kaiser Permanente to provide laser correction surgeries in the US. The joint venture provides TLC with 8.6 million captive patients who have to use the company if they decide to have laser correction surgery. TLC could perform from 130,000-190,000 LVC procedures in the FY ending May 31, 1998, as result of the joint venture. TLC will pocket $1,000 per procedure as net revenue after physician fees.

TLC The Laser Center to pierce U.S. market with new venture

TLC The Laser Center Inc of Toronto, Canada, has formed a joint venture with Kaiser Permanente's national association of medical groups to offer laser vision surgery in the US. The venture, called TLC USA L.L.C., will serve the needs of Kaiser Permanente's 8.8 million members and other patients. The joint venture is part of TLC's expansion strategy in the US, which involves signing up HMOs, insurance companies and large corporate accounts.
