The three-year-old service has turned into the biggest interpersonal trading service throughout the world. eBay posted $199,000 in net income on $1.46 million in revenues in 1997 compared to $663,000 in earnings for the third quarter of 1998 on $12.9 million in revenues. Analysts believe that eBay succeeded since it helps develop a community online by setting up security parameters for sellers and buyers alike.

NBC to plug Net service for women

National Broadcasting Company Inc (NBC) is slated to promote iVillage, an Internet service specialty made for women, as part of a deal that will give it an ownership stake in iVillage. With the deal, NBC joins the growing number of media firms targeting women, who comprise one of the fastest-growing markets on the Internet. The agreement involves promotions that should be aired during day-time and prime-time, while iVillage, in turn, will offer news and advice on parenting, families and health via NBC's and CNET's Snap ad-supported service.

Cisco weighs buying upstart

Cisco Systems Inc is evaluating a possible acquisition of Columbia, MD- based, optical networking startup Corvis Communications in a deal that sources close to the situation say could exceed $10 billion. Cisco-Corvis negotiations may get complicated if Lucent Technologies, Alcatel or Siemens decide to pursue one of the last, remaining independent optical networking firms into a bidding war. Current Analysis employee Chris Nicoll opined that Cisco needs to enter the optical transport market to complete its vision.
