Our little House of horrors lives on
Article Abstract:
The House of Representatives of Australia is the place where the best practitioners of verbal abuse go to get down and dirty. The main goal of 95% of federal MPs entering the chamber during question time or a big debate is to cheer as raucously as possible the 5% who are engaged in hurling insults. Ministers do not pretend to answer questions, only using them as excuses to continue abuse of the other side. Standards of behavior seem to have gotten worse over 25 years.

Here is the (ABC's) news...
Article Abstract:
Australian Communications Minister Sen. Richard Alston's appointment of Victorian Liberal power broker Michael Kroger to the board of the ABC has evoked public outrage. The appointment, which Kroger himself admitted was a political appointment, some say is an outright attempt to control the ABC. While the Labor Party hypocritically criticizes the appointment, neither party is in the position to bring objectivity to the board.

Haunted by ghosts of promises past
Article Abstract:
The Asian financial crisis has affected the Australian economy and politics, hurting companies such as BHP, which reported a 3rd qtr profit 67% lower than that reported for 3rd qtr 1997. Most of the impact will be felt during 4th qtr 1998, and condifence in Australia is likely to decline. Dispite promises made by Howard and Peter Costello, Australia's foreign debt and unemployment would improve.
