Raising a stink: massive demonstrations challenge Milosevic

About 100,000 people gathered on the streets of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in Dec 1996 for more than 2 weeks to demand that election results, which bought many of Milosevic's opponents to power, be reinstated. The demonstrations are the largest and longest against the governing Socialists since 1987.

The smoke clears: Milosevic grants the opposition's key demand

Milosevic finally agreed to reinstate local election results from Nov 1996, that he had previously annulled. This move came after 80 days of mass demonstrations led by the opposition coalition Zajedno. Some observers believe Milosevic's power is waning and he may soon depart the presidency.

Few believe that the Sep 14, 1996, elections in Bosnia-Herzegovina will be fair or achieve their desired goal of reunifying Bosnia. Many of the 27 political parties involved oppose the Dayton agreement they are expected to abide by.
