The aboriginal population in Saskatchewan has an unemployment rate of 39% in the urban areas, while overall unemployment in the province is only around 5%. Natives also make up 32% of the prison population. Cutbacks in social services could make the situation even worse.

Canadian rowers practiced many long hours to win their spot in the 1996 Summer Olympics, as did the many other Canadian athletes due to compete. The Games will be a welcome change of pace for Canadians who are fed up with political and constitutional struggles.

Maclean's will add several new features to the magazine beginning in 1997. They include a bimonthly national affairs column called Backstage, and a space called Dateline that will be devoted to world events and personalities affecting Canada and Canadians.
