Reform by high-tech; a district moves into the 21st century
Article Abstract:
Administrators at Central Kitsap School District in Washington state see the role of computers in the classroom as more than an extension of the teacher; they are teaching and learning tools that are an integral part of school life. A district committee made up of teachers, administrators, parents and other volunteers developed 'Strategy 2020,' a plan that hopes to prophecy what the schools will look like in 2020. Strategy 2020 covers a series of shifts in management of the district, including a decision that administrative and educational decisions should be made at the lowest level of organization, by the teachers and the students; a change in teachers' roles so they will be managers of information instead of presenters; and the use of technology to manage, diagnose, present and evaluate learning. The district has a $300,000 grant from Tandy Corp to implement the program.

Reshaping the delicate art of skull surgery with a computer
Article Abstract:
Computers assist doctors in simulating skull surgery before an operation by providing three-dimensional (3D) images that can rotated, examined and manipulated. The new technology, which is fairly inexpensive, stacks dozens of horizontal CAT scans and builds 3D images of the patient's skull. Such 3D imaging no longer requires large computers that are very expensive to operate and maintain. Surgeons can now, with simulation and computer-aided design software that costs as little as $15,000, conduct safer and shorter skull reconstruction surgery after simulating complicated surgery on a computer. Physicians note that the use of computers to simulate surgery may become more widespread as programs become less expensive and easier to use. An example of the new programs is I-sight Inc's Montefiore software.

A child's garden of electronic delights
Article Abstract:
Social researchers are finding that children are more intrigued and adept with electronic devices and computers than are their parents. Researchers find that children do not have the built up fear and distrust of computers and electronics that their parents have. On the contrary, children are fascinated by electronics and this generation seems to have an innate ability to use them easily. Educators and toy sellers agree. Both concur that children are drawn to electronics, and their imaginations seem to be excited by using computers and other electronic devices.
