Australia's Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is one of the largest users of Sun Microsystem's JavaStation thin client technology. JavaStation employs an operating system called Java, designed to be more portable and flexible than Microsoft's Windows applications. Java software was designed so the JavaStations could continue to run older RTA software, thus minimizing the cost of the new system.

A portal is a World Wide Web site that includes several services and kinds of information. The first portal was the Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link, or WELL, that served as a discussion forum. Observers feel the near future will provide all-purpose portals each computer user can design for personal preferences.
