San Jose: Vanna the Robot chooses the right letters
Article Abstract:
The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA, is a small museum that was originally named the Garage. That name has been given up as confusing. The Tech, as the museum is now called, focuses on applications of technology representing Silicon Valley industries: semiconductors, space, biotechnology, robotics, advanced materials and bicycles. The bicycles are described as both interesting in themselves and convenient for illustrating techniques of computer-aided design (CAD). Robotics is an especially popular area of the Tech: actual robots demonstrate various capabilities of robotic technology. A separate room at the Tech, which is called the Info Lounge, provides microcomputers that can be used for trying out computer software or electronic information services. The Tech is part of a San Jose-CA renovation plan. San Jose wants to become the 'capital of Silicon Valley.'

New interactive TV threatens the bliss of couch potatoes
Article Abstract:
Interactive television allows viewers to choose camera angles for concerts and sporting events and participate in game shows. Some analysts believe that interactive programming will not catch on while others believe that it adds a new dimension to television viewing. Several companies are testing interactive programming in which viewers can control the outcome of a drama and compete for prizes by predicting the outcome of sporting events, but skeptics say such fees as $400 to $500 for a terminal and $15 a month for subscribing are too high to attract many viewers. The potential for advertising is great since advertisers would have accurate information about audience's preferences.
