Scottish bank bids for NatWest

Edinburg, Ebgland-based Bank of Scotland has offered to purchase National Westmisnter Bank PLC in a hostile bid valued at 20.85 billion sterling pounds, or $50.39 billion. If approved, the deal would form a merged entity that would replace Barclays Bank PLC as the third-largest bank in Britain in terms of value. National Westminster immediately rejected the offer, saying the offer does not reflect the actual value of the NatWest franchise and NatWest Group.

Phelps' bid boosts Canadian miners
Article Abstract:
Phelps Dodge Corp, the biggest copper producer in the US, is bidding to become the world's biggest copper producer by making a move on two of its US rivals. The Phoenix, AZ-based company has made a combined $2.66 billion offer for Asarco Inc of New York and Cyprus Amax Minerals Co of Englewood, CO. London-based mining analysts expect the deal to create a domino effect in Canada and Australia.
