See you later, alligator
Article Abstract:
Australia's Northern Territory saltwater crocodiles, hunted nearly to extinction in 1971, have returned to a population of approximately 70,000 with programs designed to increase conservation awareness. Harvesting crocodiles whose skin can be used in a variety of clothing and accessories is sustainable for the first time since 1977. Chinese conservationists want their government to provide subsidies to discourage the hunting of Chinese alligators, so are attending classes in Australia to learn wildlife management.

Yellowcake millionaires
Article Abstract:
More than $20 mil in royalty payments have been made to the Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory's Kakadu National Park. However, much of the money has gone to bureaucrats. A visit by a UNESCO World Heritage Mission found that most communities live in poverty, a scene reminiscent of Asian refugee camps than Australia. The communities live and sleep on concrete floors, they lack proper sanitation equipment, toilets regularly overflow, and children play beneath flowing taps.

Darwin states its case
Article Abstract:
Darwin government's campaign for statehood failed in Oct 1998. Plebiscite results are a direct reaction to how Country Liberal Party chief minister Shane Stone handled the process. He hand-picked delegates to constitutional convention in Darwin, failed to consult the public about the draft constitution, and manipulated the referendum question.
