Security of tenure
Article Abstract:
The Australian Industrial Relations Commission decided in May 1998 that Australian universities could, in most cases, no longer hire staff on year-by-year contracts. Teachers and others staff would have to be offered permanent employment. The National Tertiary Education Union has pressed for universities to review each existing contract. Research positions and some senior management positions are still conducted by contract.

Low-paid window dressing
Article Abstract:
Research suggests the Australian program of providing welfare in exchange for work will fail. Most of the jobs offered by the government plan involve menial work, which people can see does not prepare them for other jobs. This drives down self-esteem and most quit the program. Critics charge this program is politically facile but impractical.
