Shifting priorities: are cash-strapped governments abandoning the environment?

The trend towards deregulation and provincial cost-cutting measures may serve to weaken environmental laws. Alberta and Ontario are at the forefront in privatizing parks and creating 'voluntary' regulation of industries. The Canadian federal government is also easing some environmental laws.

A messy legacy of radioactive waste: Ottawa Valley residents fight plans for a dump

Article Abstract:

Communities near Deep River are strongly opposed to government plans to store 131,400 tons of low radioactive waste in a cavern nearby the river. There are fears that the waste would leak into the river. Attempts to find a community that would accept the plan has cost $20 million so far.

Agenda: to save the earth

Article Abstract:

Canada fought hard to preserve standards for global environmental agreements set forth at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The US felt the standards were too strict and requested them changed.
