Software piracy: can the government help stop the drain on profits?
Article Abstract:
Software piracy has driven some smaller companies out of business and is adding to the US trade deficit. The software industry is one of the bright spots in the US economy, but it is estimated by the Software Publishing Assn that the industry lost $2.4 billion domestically and $12 billion in foreign sales to software pirates in 1990. Some claim that the industry is over-stating its losses to piracy and risks alienating customers through hard-line legal tactics. The industry is fighting for legislation here and abroad, claiming that the nation as a whole is hurt through the loss of trade revenue.

U.S. trade policy
Article Abstract:
The US faces an urgent need to solve its economic problems as well as address the pressing matter of formulating a feasible trade policy. Pres Clinton will have to make concrete decisions on GATT and the North American Free Trade Agreement. Meanwhile, both legislative and business sectors are convinced that the US trade is suffering because of unjust trade exercise by other countries, particularly Japan. The USgovernment should also consider adopting an industrial policy which can give USindustries the cohesiveness they need to remain globally competetive.

The issues
Article Abstract:
The ending of the Cold War has resulted in significant challenges to US-East Asian relations. The removal of the Soviet threat has shifted the balance of power and has lessened the need for an American military presence in the region. The US has to remedy problems concerning its trade relations with East Asian countries. Another sensitive issue that needs to be addressed is the re-establishment of diplomatic and economic ties with Vietnam.
